The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is the world's most preeminent pre-professional organization for students interested in public relations. Founded in 1968 by its parent society, the Public Relations Society of America, the organization has grown to include more than 11,000 members at more than 330 colleges and universities. The NMU Chapter of PRSSA has a goal to give students experience and provide professional development through activities, workshops, speakers and the Chapter blog. NMU PRSSA is open to all interested NMU students, regardless of major/minor.
The Chapter annually sends members to the PRSSA National Conference, held each fall at a rotating location. The 2016 National Conference will be held Oct. 21-25 in Indianapolis..
Each year NMU PRSSA orchestrates a campaign to raise money for local non-profit organizations. Past campaign events have included Jam for Love ski and snowboard competition, Project Compassion fashion show, 3-on-3 basketball tournaments and the Hometown Pizza Taste-Off. Members plan the events from start to finish, providing valuable event planning and coordination experience along with promotion.
NMU PRSSA members also have access to PRSSA national benefits which include the Internship Center, more than $30,000 in scholarships and awards, campaign competitions, reading/writing opportunities and more.
The Chapter has won five awards at the NMU Leadership Recognition Banquet in four categories. On the national level, the Chapter has presented a Chapter Development Session at National Conference and was a finalist for national Chapter of the Year in 2004. NMU PRSSA has produced four students who served on the PRSSA National Committee, two of which were recipients of the Elaine Averick Outstanding National Committee Member Award, and one National President.
Meetings are held on a weekly basis. Fall 2016 meetings will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evenings in LRC Room 311..
